If we've ever dreamed of visiting a fairytale castle perched on a mountain with breathtaking views, Neuschwanstein Castle is where that dream comes true.

This world-famous castle, located in Hohenschwangau near Füssen in Bavaria, Germany, is known for its romantic design and picturesque setting. Built in the late 19th century by King Ludwig II, it continues to fascinate millions of travelers each year.

How to Get to Neuschwanstein Castle

To reach the castle, we can take a train from Munich to Füssen (around 2 hours). From Füssen station, bus #73 or #78 takes us directly to Hohenschwangau village, the base of the castle, in about 10 minutes. From there, we have three options to reach the castle entrance:

- Walk: Around 30–40 minutes uphill through a forest path.

- Shuttle Bus: $3 uphill / $2 downhill (cash only), drops us near the Marienbrücke.

- Horse-drawn Carriage: ~$8 uphill / ~$4 downhill (cash only), stops below the castle, then a short walk uphill.

When Is the Best Time to Visit?

We'll get the best experience by planning our visit during these times:

- Spring (April to June): Fewer crowds, lush green scenery

- Fall (September to early October): Golden foliage, crisp air, fewer tourists

- Winter: Magical snowy atmosphere, but paths may be slippery and shuttle services limited

- Avoid mid-summer (July–August): Extremely crowded, long wait times

Try arriving before 10 AM or after 3 PM to avoid peak visiting hours.

Top Viewing Spots and Photo Tips

For the most iconic view of the castle, head to Marienbrücke (Mary's Bridge)—a short hike past the castle entrance. It offers the classic panorama we often see in postcards. Early morning or late afternoon lighting gives the best photo results.

Photography inside the castle is not allowed, but the outside views more than make up for it.
