Hey Lykkers! If we’re planning a trip to Scotland’s Isle of Skye, the Old Man of Storr is one destination we just can’t miss.
Known for its dramatic rock spires and jaw-dropping scenery, this natural wonder offers an unforgettable hike with unbeatable views. Let’s dive into everything we need to know before heading up the trail.
The Old Man of Storr is located about 11 km (6.8 miles) north of Portree, the largest town on the Isle of Skye.
By Car:
From Portree, we can drive north on the A855. The journey takes around 15–20 minutes, and there’s a designated parking lot at the trailhead.
By Bus:
Buses run from Portree to the “Storr” stop, close to the start of the hike. Check the Stagecoach Highlands Bus Service (Route 57A or 57C). Bus schedules can vary, so it's a good idea to check them in advance.
Great news – the hike to the Old Man of Storr is free of charge! There’s no entrance ticket, and the trail is open all year round.
However, if we’re driving, parking fees do apply:
- Parking fee: around $3.75 USD for up to 3 hours
- Full-day parking: about $6.25 USD
We can pay using coins or card at the parking meter. Note that during peak season, the lot can fill up quickly, so arriving early is recommended.
We can visit the Old Man of Storr any time of the year, but some times are definitely better than others:
- Best season: May to September – for longer daylight and more stable weather
- Best time of day: Early morning or late afternoon – to avoid crowds and enjoy softer lighting
- Avoid: Peak midday in summer, when tour buses arrive
Even in foggy or cloudy conditions, the area has a mysterious charm – perfect for moody photos and a quieter hike.
Here’s what we can expect from the trail:
- Distance: about 2.4 miles (3.8 km) round-trip
- Elevation gain: around 820 feet (250 meters)
- Hiking time: around 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on fitness and how often we stop
- Trail type: Out-and-back, moderately steep, rocky toward the top
As we go higher, the path gets more uneven, so wearing the right shoes is key. The reward? Absolutely breathtaking views.
Did you know the Old Man of Storr has some pretty wild stories? Locals say the towering rock is the thumb of a buried giant. Others believe an old man was turned to stone after his death. These legends add a layer of magic to the whole experience. It’s no wonder this place was used as a filming location for Ridley Scott’s movie Prometheus.
Packing smart makes all the difference. Here's a quick checklist for a smooth and safe trip:
- Waterproof jacket – even sunny days can turn wet on Skye
- Hiking boots or trail shoes – the upper trail gets rocky and slippery
- Water and snacks – no shops at the site
- Phone or camera – for some of the best photos we’ll ever take
- Offline maps – signal can be weak in the area
- Cash or card – for parking machines
- Avoid climbing on the rocks – for our own safety and to protect the site
- Arrive early – especially during peak season
- Toilets: Occasionally available at the parking area during busy months
- Shops/Food: None on-site – we should stock up in Portree before the hike
- Lodging: Portree offers cozy hotels, guesthouses, and B&Bs for all budgets
There are no restaurants near the trail, so grabbing lunch in Portree afterward is a good idea – plenty of local cafés serve warm meals and fresh bakes.
