If you're planning a trip to Madeira and craving something different from lush forests and cozy villages, Ponta de São Lourenço is the place we need to explore.

Located on the far eastern tip of the island, this wild peninsula offers raw natural beauty, strong Atlantic winds, and views that will stay with us forever. Let's walk this amazing trail together and discover what makes it so unforgettable.

Where Is It and What Makes It So Unique?

Ponta de São Lourenço is part of a protected nature reserve in eastern Madeira. It's about 22 miles (35 km) from Funchal and feels like we're stepping into another world — think desert-like cliffs, black volcanic rocks, and clear blue water on both sides. There are no trees, no villages, just open land and ocean. It's the only part of Madeira with such a dry, wild feel.

Do We Need to Pay to Get In?

Good news — the trail is completely free! No entrance fees, no permits required. We can hike here without spending a cent on tickets. The only optional cost is if we want a guided hike, which typically costs $30–$50 USD per person, often including hotel pickup and drop-off.

When Can We Visit?

The trail is open all day, every day, but the best time to start is between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM, especially if we want good light for photos and safer footing. Sunset hikes can be magical, but since the trail has no lights, we'll need to bring flashlights and be extra careful.

How Do We Get There?

Here are our options:

- By Car: If we rent a car, it takes around 40 minutes from Funchal, and parking at the Baía d'Abra lot is free.

- By Bus: Take the SAM Bus 113 toward Caniçal and get off at Baía d'Abra. The bus costs about $3 USD one way, but we'll need to walk an extra 30 minutes from the stop to the trailhead.

- By Tour: Local guided tours usually range from $30–$50 USD, with transportation, guide, and sometimes snacks included.

What's the Hike Like?

The full trail is about 5.6 miles (9 km) round trip, and it takes around 2.5 to 3.5 hours depending on our pace and stops.

- Difficulty: Moderate – not too hard, but there are some uphill parts and rocky steps.

- Trail: Mostly dirt and stone, with no shade, so the sun can be strong.

- Facilities: At the end of the trail, near Casa do Sardinha, there are restrooms and a snack bar (cash only).

Top Sights Along the Way

- Stunning ocean views from both sides of the trail.

- Wild cliffs and volcanic rocks with dramatic colors.

- Local birds like shearwaters and kestrels flying overhead.

- The view from Pico do Furado, the highest point of the trail — it's photo-perfect!

Best Time to Go

For the most comfortable hiking conditions, we recommend visiting during:

- Spring (March to May) – flowers are blooming and temperatures are cooler.

- Fall (September to October) – still warm but with fewer crowds.

- Avoid midday in summer, especially from June to August, when temperatures can hit 86°F (30°C) and there's zero shade.

What Should We Bring?

Here's our must-pack list:

- Comfortable hiking shoes

- Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat

- At least 50 oz (1.5 liters) of water per person

- Snacks or a picnic (no food for sale along the trail until the end)

- A windbreaker – it gets breezy near the cliffs

- Cash – in case we want to buy snacks at Casa do Sardinha

- Camera or phone – because trust us, we'll want photos!

Local Tips for a Smooth Trip

1. Start before 9:00 AM to beat the crowds and the heat.

2. If time is short, we can hike just the first 1.5 miles (2.5 km) to a great viewpoint and head back.

3. No swimming near the cliffs — the waves are strong and the area has no lifeguards.

4. For the best photos, aim for sunrise or late afternoon light.

5. Don't forget to check the weather before heading out — strong winds can make the hike unsafe.

Why This Place Stays With Us

Ponta de São Lourenço is one of those rare places where we can slow down and feel truly alive. With only the sound of the ocean and the wind around us, we get to leave behind the noise and fully enjoy nature's raw beauty. Each step on the trail brings new views and new peace.
