Lykkers in search of breathtaking landscapes and encounters with unique wildlife will find a treasure in the heart of northern Chile. The Los Flamencos National Reserve offers vast salt flats, colorful lagoons, and highland ecosystems that blend natural beauty with cultural heritage.
Spread across several sectors near San Pedro de Atacama, this reserve is an ideal destination for those who appreciate raw landscapes and diverse biodiversity.
A Multisector Reserve
Los Flamencos National Reserve covers nearly 74,000 hectares and is divided into several zones, each with distinct features: from salt flats and lagoons to highland valleys and desert vegetation.
Unique Flora
The Atacama Desert’s harsh climate allows only resilient species to thrive. Near the salt flats, look out for shrubs like cachiyuyo, rica rica, and tamarugo. In the highland steppe, plants like llareta, copa, and tola create a soft green carpet among the rocky terrain.
Fascinating Wildlife
The reserve is home to mammals such as vicuñas, foxes, pumas, and vizcachas. Bird enthusiasts will enjoy sightings of condors, rheas, and the three flamingo species that nest here: the Andean, James’s, and Chilean flamingos.
Location
The reserve is located in the Antofagasta Region, within the commune of San Pedro de Atacama, in El Loa Province.
